HYDRAFIA and STAAQ Announce Strategic Cooperation to Advance Decentralised Electrification and Hydrogen Storage for Reliable, Clean Power in Rural and Off-Grid Zones in Morroco

As global energy systems demand firm, dispatchable renewable power beyond solar daylight cycles, hydrogen provides the missing link. HYDRAFIA, the Moroccan energy startup acting as project developer, local coordinator and strategic lead, has entered a strategic cooperation with STAAQ Technology, the European technology company providing expertise across the hydrogen value chain and system integration.

The project is structured around a hybrid energy system combining solar PV, hydrogen production through electrolysis, pressurised hydrogen storage, and fuel cells for electricity reconversion. This hydrogen-based architecture enables long-duration storage from hours to weeks delivering resilient, decarbonised and reliable electrification where solar alone cannot providesuffice. A pilot phase is intended to be implemented on the MASEN R&D platform, leveraging Morocco’s leading sustainable energy agency’s testing environment for innovative hybrid solutions.

Within this cooperation, HYDRAFIA leads the project as developer and strategic coordinator, responsible for local structuring, institutional coordination in Morocco, and overall project direction. STAAQ Technology acts as technology partner, bringing hydrogen expertise in electrolysis, storage, and full system integration. Together, the consortium is aiming to validate the technical and economic viability of the solution before scaling to large-scale deployment across industrial sites, ports, mining operations, and rural electrification programs.

This partnership aligns with EU-Morocco energy cooperation under the Global Gateway initiative, as well as both parties’ hydrogen roadmaps. The project is positioned as an early-stage investment opportunity with strong replication potential, targeting grant mechanisms that reward investment readiness and socio-economic impact. By demonstrating that a solar-hydrogen hybrid can be both technically robust and commercially viable, the cooperation aims to unlock financing for scalable deployment across Africa’s industrial corridors and energy-poor regions. Long-term, this cooperation establishes itself as a key player in hydrogen-based energy systems in Morocco and beyond.
